Music Ministry

Music Ministry – The human voice – not the organ or piano – is the principle instrument of the church. This ministry ensures that the whole body of the faithful may be able to actively participate in that (song) which is rightly theirs. Vocalists and instrumentalists comprise persons drawn from the community who possess the requisite musical skills and a commitment to scheduled rehearsals and liturgies.

Contact Jenna de Longpré if you have an interest in this ministry.

Adult Choir

The choir enriches celebrations by adding musical elements beyond the capabilities of the congregation alone. It is a commitment from September through mid June to one weekend Mass three times a month, plus other scheduled Feast Day liturgies. We sing a blend of contemporary songs, traditional hymns and chant using both straight melody and S.A.T.B octavo arrangements.

Gift Of Time: Practices are on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 PM. With two additional rehearsals for Christmas and two for Easter
Qualifications: Must love to sing and enjoy the challenge of developing the voice.
Training: This is accomplished in weekly rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

Resurrection Choir

This choir is made up of adults who are available during the day to sing for funerals. We rehearse one hour before, and sing a blend of contemporary and traditional hymns that are very familiar. The music is simple, not difficult to follow. If you can carry a tune and are available occasionally during the day for a couple of hours, this music ministry might be just for you.

Gift Of Time: Two hours during the day, as needed prior to a funeral.
Qualifications: Ability to carry a simple and familiar tune.
Training: No formal training required.

Contemporary Ensemble

The Contemporary Ensemble leads worship on a regular basis (2-3 weekends a month for Saturday Masses and other Feast Day Liturgies).  This ensemble is great for accommodating semi-proficient instrumentalists and vocalists with limited availability.  The music encompasses hymns and contemporary songs to facilitate praise and prayer by utilizing a wide variety of instruments and vocal backgrounds. Make this a ContempUrary  Ensemble by joining!

Gift Of Time: Rehearsal is scheduled one Tuesday a month from 6:30-7:30pm.
Qualifications: Possessing spirit and embracing praise through contemporary music is a significant component, while understanding the importance of preserving reverence and spiritual focus during worship.
Training: This is accomplished through rehearsals and some outside workshops.

Handbell Choir

Learning to ring handbells is easier than it appears, and a good understanding of handbell ringing can be accomplished in just a few rehearsals. Eleven to fourteen ringers are needed to fully complement our 4 1/2 octave set of handbells and hand chimes. Open to adults and youth in grades 9-12.

Gift Of Time: Practices are Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00 PM and assist at liturgy every four to six weeks.
Qualifications: If you can count to four and differentiate up from down, you can successfully ring handbells.
Training: This is accomplished in weekly rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

This ministry is both singer and leader of congregational song to promote the singing of the entire gathered assembly. A Cantor is required for all weekend celebrations of the Mass and other Feast Days on a rotating schedule. Other venues for Cantoring include weddings, funerals and Cantor mentoring to students in our High School Faith Formation program. Although it is not required, Cantors are urged to take part in the Thursday evening Adult Choir, as this is where new music is learned.

Gift Of Time: Rehearsals are one Saturday morning from one to two hours.
Qualifications: Experienced singers with strong voices who are able to read or follow music are eligible to join after an audition with the music director.
Training: This is accomplished through rehearsals. Special workshops and courses are available at Holy Redeemer and through the Grand Rapids Chapter Of National Pastoral Musicians (N.P.M.).

Children’s Choir

This choir is open to all children in grades 1st – 5th. We rehearse once a month during scheduled faith formation classes. Those that are interested can then sign up to sing at Mass that following weekend. This is not a highly polished group, our objective is to make music a direct extension of children’s faith formation.

Gift Of Time: One weekend Mass per month on a sign-up basis. Weekly rehearsals Tuesdays 5pm-5:45pm and Sundays 12:10pm-1pm in conjunction with faith formation classes.
Qualifications: Children who love to sing and have fun!
Training: This is accomplished in rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

Youth Choir

This choir is open to grades 7 through 12 as an extension of Youth Faith Formation.  We rehearse one Sunday a month from 12:30-1:15pm.  This is an opportunity for youth leadership and early cantor development through special courses and our adult mentors.  Those interested in being a cantor must be fully imitated members of the Church.

Gift Of Time: Participants must be available to rehearse one Sunday a month from 12:10-1pm (attendance required to sing at Mass) and one weekend Mass per month or other liturgies as scheduled.
Qualifications: Youth who love to sing and grow in their faith.
Training: This is accomplished in rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

Those who are sixteen years of age and older and semi-proficient in ability that desire participation to enhance worship through instrumentation are encouraged to share their God-given gifts to do so!  This provides additional opportunities to collaborate with other instrumentalists sand ensembles while contributing musical attributes to the liturgy and other occasions outside of the human voice.

Gift Of Time: Rehearsals and Mass schedules will be based on the individual’s availability and need after meeting with the Music Director.
