Music Ministry

Music Ministry – The human voice – not the organ or piano – is the principle instrument of the church. This ministry ensures that the whole body of the faithful may be able to actively participate in that (song) which is rightly theirs. Vocalists and instrumentalists comprise persons drawn from the community who possess the requisite musical skills and a commitment to scheduled rehearsals and liturgies.

Contact Jenna Fowle if you have an interest in this ministry.

Adult Choir

The choir enriches celebrations by adding musical elements beyond the capabilities of the congregation alone. It is a commitment from September through mid June to one weekend Mass three times a month, plus other scheduled Feast Day liturgies. We sing a blend of contemporary songs, traditional hymns and chant using both straight melody and S.A.T.B octavo arrangements.

Gift Of Time: Practices are on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 PM. With two additional rehearsals for Christmas and two for Easter
Qualifications: Must love to sing and enjoy the challenge of developing the voice.
Training: This is accomplished in weekly rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

Resurrection Choir

This choir is made up of adults who are available during the day to sing for funerals. We rehearse one hour before, and sing a blend of contemporary and traditional hymns that are very familiar. The music is simple, not difficult to follow. If you can carry a tune and are available occasionally during the day for a couple of hours, this music ministry might be just for you.

Gift Of Time: Two hours during the day, as needed prior to a funeral.
Qualifications: Ability to carry a simple and familiar tune.
Training: No formal training required.

Handbell Choir

Learning to ring handbells is easier than it appears, and a good understanding of handbell ringing can be accomplished in just a few rehearsals. Eleven to fourteen ringers are needed to fully complement our 4 1/2 octave set of handbells and hand chimes. Open to adults and youth in grades 9-12.

Gift Of Time: Practices are Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00 PM and assist at liturgy every four to six weeks.
Qualifications: If you can count to four and differentiate up from down, you can successfully ring handbells.
Training: This is accomplished in weekly rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

This ministry is both singer and leader of congregational song to promote the singing of the entire gathered assembly. A Cantor is required for all weekend celebrations of the Mass and other Feast Days on a rotating schedule. Other venues for Cantoring include weddings, funerals and Cantor mentoring to students in our High School Faith Formation program. Although it is not required, Cantors are urged to take part in the Thursday evening Adult Choir, as this is where new music is learned.

Gift Of Time: Rehearsals are one Saturday morning from one to two hours.
Qualifications: Experienced singers with strong voices who are able to read or follow music are eligible to join after an audition with the music director.
Training: This is accomplished through rehearsals. Special workshops and courses are available at Holy Redeemer and through the Grand Rapids Chapter Of National Pastoral Musicians (N.P.M.).

Children’s Choir

This choir is open to all children in grades K-5. We rehearse once a month during scheduled faith formation classes. Those that are interested can then sign up to sing at Mass that following weekend. This is not a highly polished group, our objective is to make music a direct extension of children’s faith formation.

Gift Of Time: One weekend Mass per month on a sign-up basis. Weekly rehearsals Wednesdays 5;30 – 6:15pm in conjunction with faith formation classes.
Qualifications: Children who love to sing and have fun!
Training: This is accomplished in rehearsals. No previous experience is required.

Youth Ensemble

This ensemble is open to grades 6th-12th as an extension of Youth Faith Formation. We rehearse Sundays at 12:30-2:00pm This is an opportunity for youth leadership and early Cantor development through special courses with our adult mentors. Instrumentalists are also encouraged to participate to expand their musical horizons!

Gift Of Time: Sunday rehearsal from 12:30 – 2:00pm two times a month (attendance required for one out of the two rehearsals to play at Mass) and one weekend Mass per month or other liturgies as scheduled. Those who are not able to participate year round but want to sing/play at Christmas are welcome to join if they attend all rehearsals focusing on Christmas music.
Qualifications: Youth who love to sing, play instruments and grow in their faith. Those interested in being a cantor must be fully initiated members of the Church
Training: This is accomplished at rehearsals. Music transcribed for instrumentalists will be determined by each individual’s level of confidence and skills.
